The Fiskars X27 has been my beloved go-to axe since 2010! That’s when I first set my sights on the Peak Death Race. This splitting axe is one of the easiest to use on the market. With the 36-inch length handle, this axe is designed with the traditional wood splitting axe as a guide. The X27 comes with a flared wedge along the base of the handle, its perfectly balanced weight, and length makes it easy to deliver maximum power. The same axe is available in smaller sizes, like the X25 and the X15. This is the best of the best when it comes to splitting wood.

Smaller version of the x27. Fantastic axe for all the same reasons, usually suitable for someone a little shorter – great for medium to large sized logs.
Fiskars X15 23.5-Inch Composite Axe

Wouldn’t recommend unless you really want to save weight and size. It’s great for felling trees but with all the wood you would need to split at a Death Race I would honestly recommend against this option.
Gransfors Bruks Wooden Axe

The fancy pants of the axe party. The Gransfors Bruks is one of those products that some people swear by even though it has an outlandish price tag. Kind of like the Apple of axes. It’s a great piece of craftsmanship, don’t get me wrong, but is it really worth the $200+ price, I’m not convinced. If you’ve got the money to spend and want to show off and make your lumbersexual fantasies come true, the Gransfors Bruks is for you. Personally, this is too lux for me.

Much like the Fiskars X15, I wouldn’t recommend such a short axe for all the wood splitting required at the Death Race, but if you’re shorter or need something lighter and still made from a composite material, this could get the job done.
Husqvarna 26″ Wooden Multi-Purpose Axe

A slightly pricier axe, this wooden option is one that comes in at a comfortable weight and has a lot of power. If you want a classic looking wood splitting axe, this one will give you that look. This slick axe comes with a leather cover to protect you from the sharp edge when placed in storage.
Husqvarna A2400 Composite Multi-Purpose Axe

This composite axe has a fantastic balance to provide a solid amount of power. The only reason I’ve given this fewer stars is that I feel the price is unnecessarily high but know that it does come with a certain level of durability that might be enough to justify the added price, I’ve yet to determine that for a fact.
